Roderick Vos : “Basalt is a series of two low tables in which the material takes centre stage: black lava stone. The legs are smoothly polished. But a small miracle takes place in the tabletop. The lava stone is cut using a high-pressure water jet, then glazed and fired. For a moment, this material – the result of volcanic force – returns to the heat that once shaped it. In the kiln, the glaze fuses with the rough surface. The result is depth, tension and a rich, expressive character. No two pieces are the same, with unpredictable variations in hue, reflection and texture. For Mother Nature knows no uniformity.”
